10 Tips For People Who Are Thinking About Joining The Food Truck Industry
10. Go For It!
Tip No. 1: Go for it! Don’t let anything hold you back, not even the naysayers. You have every right to follow your dreams, and if you are really determined to become a food truck owner, then you can.
Just make sure you create a great plan and take real action.
9. Do Your Homework Via A Massive Amount Of Research
This is a tip that a lot of food truck owners don’t listen to before making the giant leap. They don’t do their homework, and they think they are great cooks (and they probably are), but the problem lies in the fact that being a great chef in this industry is not enough.
Why? Well, because there is so much to being a food truck owner, which is why you need to do your research on everything before buying your mobile kitchen. Read articles and books, listen to podcasts, ask around, go to conferences, talk to current food truck owners — anything!
Do. Your. Homework.
If you don’t, and if you do become a food truck owner, then you will likely struggle until you learn the ins and outs of this industry.
8. Really Think About What Type Of Food You Want To Serve
This is the fun part. With that in mind, it is very important to stand out in this industry via your food. A simple burger joint, hot dog stand or taco truck likely isn’t going to lead to a massive amount of success in the food truck industry, for those things have already been done.
Take some time to think about what you want your food truck concept to be, what your menu will consist of and how you plan on being unique/standing out.

7. Look At Ways To Make Money In This Industry
The No. 1 way you are going to make money is by, of course, serving food on a daily basis (or however many days you plan on staying open). However, if you want to succeed in this industry, then you are likely going to have to find other streams of income (such as catering). Therefore, look for ways to make money in this industry now so you can start incorporating these ideas into your plan on Day 1.
6. Save Up Some Money
This is a no-brainer. After all, you need to save up money to purchase your truck in the first place, but let’s take this a step further…
So many people quit their jobs and take a leap at their dreams. We don’t have an issue with that. The problem comes into play when these people quit their jobs and don’t have a realistic plan put into place. For example, a couple of months of living expenses saved up as a backup plan.
You might be a success right off the bat, and we really do hope that is the case, but we also don’t want you worrying about money (well, at least when it comes to worrying about paying rent, buying inventory, paying employees, etc.) when you are first starting out, so saving up some money as a backup plan would be an MVP move.
5. Don’t Settle On The Cheapest Truck You Can Find
Please, don’t buy the cheapest food truck you can find. That could lead to you getting a terrible truck, which could lead to it breaking down in no time.
We highly recommend you going with a high-end food truck (you know, like a truck from Prestige), because the last thing you want to worry about is your truck being out of commission as a result of it breaking down.
4. Decide Where You Can Succeed As A Food Truck Owner, Even If It Means A Move Is Inevitable
If you really want to succeed as a food truck owner, then you might have to move, and you might not. The key is to analyze your situation. If food trucks aren’t common in your area, then it might be a good idea to bring one into the equation since you wouldn’t have much competition via other food trucks. On the other hand, food trucks might not be popular in your area because so many have tried and failed, or they aren’t allowed.
Look at the laws/rules, and also see where your best chances of succeeding in this industry are, even if it means moving.
3. Don’t Join This Industry Until You Are 100 Percent Ready
Do not become a food truck owner until your truck is, of course, ready to go. Likewise, don’t join this industry until your social media accounts are ready, until you have hired all of your employees and the list could go on and on.
We know you are excited about becoming a food truck owner, but the more prep work you do now, the easier your life will be once you finally do join this industry.
2. Take A Business Class (Or Read A Business Book)
So many owners are great cooks … but they are not business savvy, and that little fact could crush a food truck business. Therefore, in hopes of you becoming more business savvy, take a class, or read business books.
